Haptic Technology is Revolutionizing the Fan Experience

While millions watch the Seattle Seahawks battle New England Patriots, in their 11-year rematch, at the 2026 Super Bowl, approximately ten blind and low-vision fans will experience the game through an entirely different medium: touch. The NFL has partnered with startup OneCourt and Ticketmaster to introduce a tactile device that translates real-time football action into vibrations, allowing users to track the ball's position on the field, feel distinct vibration patterns for different plays, and hear synchronized audio commentary without broadcast delays. This isn't just an assistive technology add-on for these fans; it's a fundamental reimagining of how sports can be experienced.
The first thing to be considered is who is being directly affected: blind and low-vision sports fans. These 7.6 million people with visual impairments have traditionally been limited to an audio only experience that comes with broadcast delays and other frustrating hurdles. Now, fans who have experienced vision loss are getting back a piece of what made them love sports in the first place, and fans that have life-long blindness are getting to experience the game like never before. Disabled fans can now go from passive observers, dependent on others to tell them what is happening and never quite being able to experience the in the moment excitement of a big play, to active participants that are able to engage with real-time gameplay.
While this innovation is incredibly important to blind and low-vision fans, it expands opportunity far beyond the disabled community. In the past several years the sports world has had to rethink what the fan experience should look like. COVID-19 for example took fans out of stadiums and completely changed not only the fans' experience at home but the players' experience playing in those empty stadiums without the energy that the fans bring to every game. Even though fans could not be physically present and the game-day experience was completely different from the norm; organizations like the NFL had to find a way to keep fans watching and interested in the outcome of the season. With this developing technology, an at-home experience may soon become just as exciting as an in-person one.
For decades, stadiums have invested billions in jumbotrons and other visual aids that reinforce the narrative that sports consumption is inherently visual. Therefore, they are able to charge an arm and a leg for seats located closer to the field because that closeness directly correlates to a fans experience. OneCourt reveals that much of what we consider essential to sports fandom like spatial awareness, the tension of a developing play, and the visceral excitement of scoring can be communicated through multiple sensory channels. Can you imagine a fan in the nosebleed section with a haptic device that has a more immersive understanding than someone in a luxury box. This could democratize the in-stadium experience and undermine tiered pricing models, or create new revenue streams from technology rentals and data access fees.
Broadcast platforms should be watching closely. If tactile devices become mainstream, viewers at home might demand synchronized haptic feeds alongside video streams, requiring entirely new production capabilities and infrastructure. Media companies that adapt early could differentiate their products and services to include tactile and immersive broadcast right from a fans couch. However, those that don't buy into this new form of sports viewing risk obsolescence as tech-native fans expect immersive, multi-modal experiences.
